Song of My Soul

The beat of my heart

is the song of my soul

I lift my voice in harmony

I want the world to know

my passions, my dreams

even in the face of adversity

When it seems bleak or vivid,

like my ancestors in the field

under the sun beaten skies,

they continued to rise;

The only thing they set,

was their eye on the prize

On the chain gangs

They continued to sing

When the slang of the whip

stang, they continued

to let freedom ring

never letting their faith die

It sent chills up my spine

viewing old historical clips

Still all I could read

on their lips is

we shall overcome someday.

What Went Wrong
  The weatherman made a prediction,

But GOD made it a contradiction

As the mighty winds and pouring rains

Turned and changed it course for land

Crashing and thrashing, then trashing everything

In its path, scattering homes, cars and people

With rising waters, swollen rivers and houses,

Floating like boats, cars with no drivers, just floating along

Trees uprooted with power lines grounded from the falls

People everywhere and no where, cries day and night

People across the nation in fright seeing images from the media

Of a forgotten people in a place not recognized, New Orleans

The Black city of Atlantis, not Atlanta, Atlantis, submerged

Death and dying arrive with the President as he looks

Around hearing cries of blame, no shame as he stands

Pondering an answer to “Where is the National Guard?”

A question we all can answer, “Not here.” No place safe for

The weary ones, except the rooftops of their homes, waiting

For the late rescue and the much too late help for some

Bodies floating in watery graves, passing floating homes

Now floating coffins for others yet discovered, man, woman and child,

in their watery graves, the once proud descendants of slaves.

their cries were heard, but not by a timely government.

People well known and not known began to show up with water, food, medicines, and

clothes with shoulders to lean or cry on, underlined with love. Too late to

Point the fingers of blame for there is no shame, just words and a question,

“What went wrong?”
